2022 Canada Sevens will go ahead, scheduled for April

The 2022 Canada Sevens are still on, just at a later date.

As first reported by Postmedia earlier this week, Rugby Canada confirmed Thursday that the popular annual tournament has been shifted back two months.

The 2022 tournament, part of the World Rugby Sevens Series, will now take place April 16-17. It was originally scheduled for Feb. 26-27.

The change is because of “the current COVID-19 conditions in British Columbia,” the tournament organizers said in a press release. And moving the date back to April also gives them the best opportunity to have a full crowd, a tournament source confirmed.

The Canada Women’s Sevens remain scheduled for April 30 and May 1 in Langford, near Victoria.

The last full-capacity Canada Sevens was in March 2020, days before the World Health Organization declared that COVID-19 was causing a global pandemic. About 38,000 fans were in attendance for the 2020 tournament at B.C. Place Stadium.
